How To Spot Water Damage To Floors And Other Areas
6/14/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage can happen from any number of situations: pipe leaks, storm damage, blocked drains, HVAC units, and many others. Here are some of the initial signs that water damage has occurred in your home or business:
- An increase in your utility bills can mean there is a leak somewhere in your pipes or fixtures.
- A moldy or damp smell in the air can be a result of sitting water in the walls, ceiling, or floors.
- Dark or noticeable wet spots on carpets or ceilings causing discoloration from water damage.
- Sounds of running water, dripping, or leaking from pipes.
- Cracking, flaking, or bubbling of paint on walls or ceilings.
If you have wood floors or laminate, you could begin to see it warp and buckle as a result from water damage. If there is a stain, that is the result of slow and consistent leak, whereas mold development is a sign of spots that have been consistently damp for a period of time. Be sure to get a professional’s opinion to accurately gauge the amount of damage because if considerable amount of damage has occurred to the subfloors they will need to be removed and replaced.
If you suspect water damage on the subfloors or floors, look for:
- Sunken and uneven floors
- Shifting or bouncing when walking across the floors
- If you notice a musty smell in certain rooms or areas
- Squeaking noises
