Fire Safety Tips During the Holiday Season

The holiday season brings family together for good times and good cheer, but it can also be stressful and chaotic. On top of that, did you know the risk of home cooking fires is much higher during the holiday season?
In 2016, around 1,570 home cooking fires were reported on Thanksgiving day alone; many of these incidents were caused by unattended cooking involving stoves and/or ovens.
Keep your home and your family safe this holiday season by following these safety tips:
- Keep an eye on your food! Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop, and do NOT leave your home with anything cooking in your oven.
- Clear your stovetop to ensure it is free of any flammable objects (towels, paper, cardboard, etc.).
- Keep children under age 5 away from the stove.
- Manage electric cords from kitchen appliances (such as coffee makers, plate warmers, mixers, etc.) so they are not dangling off the counter for children to reach.
- Keep matches and utility lighters in a cabinet up above, out of reach of children.
- Do regular checks on your smoke alarms to ensure they are working by pressing the test button.
- When in doubt, just get out! Do not try to fight any fires that may grow out of control. Leave the house and call 911 as soon as you are a safe distance away from the fire.
